    We’re excited to be hosting our 20th Annual WiN Canada Conference from October 15-18, 2023 in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Please join us for an exciting program that will include an opportunity for networking, professional development, exchanging ideas and technical tours.     The annual Harriet Brooks Award (previously called the WiN-Canada Award) recognizes a member(s) who has/have made an outstanding leadership contribution to the success of WiN Canada. Click here to learn more.  

    The WiN Canada “Mentor of the Year Award” was newly established in 2021. Winners of this award are recognized for their support to a member(s) professional growth and development, to ensure they reach their full potential through mentoring. Individuals recognized for this award promote career opportunities for women and young girls in STEM and skilled trades, demonstrate a commitment to mentoring and inspire others to grow and succeed professionally.     The WiN Canada “Ally of the Year Award” was also established in 2021. Winners of this award are recognized for their support in promoting diversity and inclusion within the workplace, while actively demonstrating the qualities of a good ally in the pursuit of gender balance. They promote WiN Canada and the benefits of the nuclear industry, via social media, speaking engagements or other methods. This ally advocates WiN’s mission to external organizations and encourages peers and colleagues to engage with WiN Canada. More details available here.

    In June of 2020, Women in Nuclear (WiN) Canada was honoured to receive the Education and Communication Award at the Canadian Nuclear Achievement Awards, jointly presented by the Canadian Nuclear Society and the Canadian Nuclear Association. The awards were presented on June 8th during the virtual CNS Annual Conference.

    “The Women in Nuclear (WiN) Canada team is recognized for helping to reshape the perception of the nuclear industry in our communities, and for providing mentorship, training, and leadership opportunities for women in STEM-related careers in the industry.

    Call for Proposals Now Open

    We are so excited to finally be able to unite for our annual in-person conference in Niagara Falls, Ontario from September 25th to 29th, 2022. 

    Our theme for 2022 is "Forward Together" and we will be highlighting the vital role women play in all applications of nuclear science and radiation technology.

    Objectives:

    The objectives of the conference are to:

    • Exchange information on the latest developments, trends and challenges in the nuclear field;
    • Provide opportunities for WiN Canada members and chapters to share experience.
    • Communicate and raise public awareness of the benefits of nuclear science and technology
    • Foster interest among women in pursuing careers in nuclear-related fields

    Program Opportunities:

    The Program Committee invites applicants to submit an abstract for an oral presentation (20 mins) as part of the program. In keeping with the theme of “Forward Together” WiN Canada encourages applicants to submit presentations which emphasize the positive aspects of using nuclear technologies as well as those which convey personal or professional stories of optimism and success. 

    Note: WiN Canada would like to provide a special invitation to students who are enrolled in post-secondary institutions in programs (including internship or co-op programs) that are aligned to the Nuclear Industry to submit a paper noted above.

    The Call for Papers (Oral Presentations) will be included in the program as breakout sessions.  Topics for submission can include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

    • Leadership and Personal Development
    • Safeguards and Non-Proliferation
    • Isotopes Use and/or Production
    • SMRs
    • Innovation in Nuclear
    • Decommissioning/Waste Management
    • Climate Change
    • Sustainability and Environment
    • Research and Development
    • Diversity and Inclusion
    • Other (Please Specify)

    The target audience for this conference is comprised of professionals working in the nuclear industry, government, supply chain and other stakeholders. Representation from all aspects of the nuclear industry is expected.

    Abstracts:

    Abstract submissions should not exceed more than 300 words on one of the topics listed above. The abstract should provide enough information on the contents of the proposed paper to enable the Program Committee to evaluate the submission. 

    Please attach your current bio or CV to your submission.

    Note: If you plan to co-present, please have the person who will be the primary presenter submit the abstract application.

    Submission of final content for conference 

    Proposal Evaluation:

    The Program Committee will evaluate all proposals submitted by the deadline. Proposals will be evaluated in two ways:

    • Merit and clarity of the 300-word abstract; and
    • Completeness of the proposal, particularly having well-developed content to understand all relevant aspects of the topic.

    Individuals with proposals chosen for inclusion in the WiN Canada Annual Conference will be notified no later than July 30th, 2022.

    We are excited to announce the recipients for WiN Canada's 2021 Awards and Scholarships! 

    Harriet Brooks Winner: Sarah Foster, Bruce Power

    Harriet Brooks was the first female nuclear scientist in Canada; defying the odds in a male-dominated field. Her research discoveries were so important that they became foundational to subsequent research findings by other notable physicists. Ms. Brooks faced discrimination as a woman who wished to simultaneously have a career and a family, when this aspiration went against traditional views. She was posthumously recognized in 2002 as an inductee to the Canadian Science and Engineering Hall of Fame.

    Harriet Brooks Award winners are strong ambassadors for WiN Canada and effectively support the association’s objectives to:

    • Develop a dialogue with the public to promote awareness around the factual contribution of nuclear technologies to people and society.
    • Contribute to knowledge and experience exchange among members and Chapters.
    • Promote career interest in nuclear engineering, science, technology, the trades and other nuclear-related professions, especially among women and young people.

    Mentor of the Year Award Winner: Mike Rinker, Director General, Directorate of Assessment and Analysis

    The WiN Canada “Mentor of the Year Award” is newly established in 2021. Winners of this award are recognized for their support to a member(s) professional growth and development, to ensure they reach their full potential through mentoring. Individuals recognized for this award promote career opportunities for women and young girls in STEM and skilled trades, demonstrate a commitment to mentoring and inspire others to grow and succeed professionally. They also donate their time and attention to help women in the nuclear industry reach their full potential. The key roles of a mentor include, but are not limited to, nurturing intellectual growth, career development, professional guidance, and positive role modeling. This award is open to people of all genders.

    Ally of the Year Award Winner: Dr Akira Tokuhiro, Dean Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science, Ontario Tech University

    The WiN Canada “Ally of the Year Award” was newly established in 2021. Winners of this award are recognized for their support in promoting diversity and inclusion within the workplace, while actively demonstrating the qualities of a good ally in the pursuit of gender balance. They promote WiN Canada and the benefits of the nuclear industry, via social media, speaking engagements or other methods. This ally advocates WiN’s mission to external organizations and encourages peers and colleagues to engage with WiN Canada. This award is not limited to individuals employed in a nuclear-related industry and is open to persons of all genders.

    WiN Canada Student Scholarship

    Undergraduate #1 – Ruha Khan, McMaster University, Chemical Engineering

    Undergraduate #2 – Elsa Bassi, McMaster University, Environmental and Earth Sciences

    Graduate – Eden Gough, Ontario Tech University, MASc Nuclear Engineering

    Technical – Michaela McGillvray, Algonquin College, Applied Nuclear Science and Radiation Safety

    WiN Canada wishes to recognize young women who play a pivotal role, in their studies and in their communities, in highlighting the benefits of the nuclear industry. The WiN Canada Student Scholarship will be awarded to four (4) deserving applicants who will each receive an engraved plaque and a financial contribution of CAN $3,000, to be put towards their continued pursuit of a career in the nuclear industry.
